Five Scores for the Military Road is the first iteration of Heterodyne and five composers have created scores for sections of the Military Road, a nineteenth century route that passes through the Wicklow mountains. The composers are Caoimhín Ó'Raghallaigh, Cian Nugent, Chequerboard, ARROW-SHOWER and Brendan William Jenkinson.The five scores have been contextualized with an original soundscape of field recordings created by sound designer Tadhg O'Sullivan.

Heterodyne is a new project that will commission composers and musicians to 'score' roads, ultimately creating a database of site-specific audio pieces for infrastructure throughout Ireland and internationally.

The composers were selected as a result of ongoing discourse with the artist Fiona Hallinan. They work in an array of genres, which allows for this iteration of the project to act as showcase for the concept.
